A Suffolk mum has launched a hair salon that specializes in male hair replacement, aiming to boost confidence and create a lasting legacy for her son.
Tori Laval, owner of Phoenix Hair Design on Gainsborough Street in Sudbury, opened the salon after 13 years in the hairdressing industry. Inspired by a close friend’s struggle with self-esteem due to hair loss, she wanted to offer a private, supportive space for men to receive non-surgical hair replacement treatments.
“I trained in the hair systems because my best friend struggled with his confidence,” Laval said. “There’s still a stigma around hair replacements in men, but something like this can truly change someone’s life.”
The salon provides a range of services including cuts, coloring, and hair styling. However, its specialty lies in hair extensions and non-surgical hair systems for men. These systems give a more natural and secure result than traditional wigs. Laval said the emotional reactions from clients prove the impact of her work. “I’ve had blokes in here crying with happiness when they see the result,” she added.
Laval’s passion for hairdressing began early. “I badgered my mum from the age of 11 to let me sweep the floors in the salon,” she said. That early interest has grown into a business now recognized among the top ten salons in the district by the Hair and Beauty Awards. Laval was also a finalist for Hairstylist of the Year.
As a mum of one, Laval hopes the salon will one day be a foundation for her son. “I want to build a legacy and give my son the best,” she said. “If he wants to get into the industry when he’s older, the business will already be here for him.”
The salon officially opened on Saturday, welcoming guests to see the space and learn more about its offerings.
