A 57-year-old man says his life has been “destroyed” after a failed hair transplant left him scarred and unable to work. Mark Sweeney, from Glasgow, underwent the procedure at Merchant City Medical Centre but claims it went badly wrong.
Sweeney, who previously worked as a waiter at The Buttery restaurant in Glasgow, says he can no longer face the public. He now covers his forehead with a hat at all times and says the experience has left him with anxiety and depression.
“They’ve ruined my life—absolutely ruined and destroyed my life, and I can’t do anything about it,” he told The Daily Record. “I can’t speak to people or look them in the eye because I feel as though they’re looking at my head.”
He decided to have the surgery in the UK, paying £3,500, in hopes of avoiding the risks sometimes associated with treatment abroad. But he now claims the outcome resembles what he calls “a horror story from Turkey.”Sweeney alleges that the surgeons inserted the grafts too deeply, leaving visible ridges and lumps across his forehead. He also says there is a bald patch on the side of his head where grafts were taken.
The clinic’s website claims it uses advanced technologies for FUE and FUT hair transplants, promising safe and effective results. It also offers treatments like scalp pigmentation and platelet-rich plasma therapy.
Sweeney, however, has warned others to be cautious, saying his experience shows that poor results can happen even at UK clinics. He is now saving for corrective surgery at a clinic in the United States.Paul Mulholland, CEO of Merchant City Medical Group, confirmed that Sweeney had been a patient. “Mark turned up at our office yesterday and was told to leave,” he said.
