Dylan Dreyer Shines at a Rainy Kentucky Derby with Stylish Hair Hacks

Dylan Dreyer proved her professionalism and style once again as she covered the Kentucky Derby for NBC earlier this May, even as rainy weather posed a challenge.

The Today Show meteorologist handled the less-than-ideal conditions with grace. Her sleek fashion choices and perfectly styled hair stood out despite the rain and restrictions against using umbrellas inside the venue.

Dreyer’s hairstylist, Kim Russo, shared with HELLO! how they prepared for the big day. “I gave Dylan fresh highlights to keep things bright under those hats,” Russo said. “With the rain, she was happy we did that!” She also noted that Dylan’s hair had been left uncut since before her trip to Paris, allowing them extra length to work with.

That added length turned out to be key. “The extra length allowed me to hide a braid underneath her hair across the nape of her neck,” Russo explained. “We used that braid to anchor the elastic straps that held her hats in place.” Cordless hot tools also played a vital role in keeping Dylan’s hair looking polished through multiple wardrobe changes and outdoor shots.

Dreyer, a mother of three, shared several behind-the-scenes photos on social media, showing her braving the rain in style. Her outfits included a floor-length gown with an asymmetric strap, paired with a bright floral fascinator, and a tie-dye dress matched with a bold pink hat.

Dylan has been a regular fixture at the Kentucky Derby for NBC and has also traveled to the UK to cover Royal Ascot. In a 2024 interview with HELLO!, she explained the key differences between the two prestigious horse racing events.

“The biggest difference is the Kentucky Derby is all day and then everything ends,” she said. “When the big race happens it’s a mad dash to get out of there.” In contrast, Royal Ascot has a more gradual pace. “In the morning, there are a lot of families, and everyone is there for the Royal procession. Then the racing begins. But after that, the party starts by the bandstand with a big sing-along. Nobody rushes out. It’s like the day builds to that moment.”

Despite the rain, Dreyer once again brought elegance and expertise to one of the year’s biggest racing events, combining fashion, function, and flair.
