Prince William surprised the public last November when he appeared with a beard for the first time, sparking a wave of excitement and admiration. Known for his clean-shaven look, the Prince of Wales unexpectedly stepped into the spotlight as a style influencer.
While his wife, Princess Kate, is often recognized for setting beauty trends, it’s William who has recently grabbed attention with his facial hair. Now, he has revealed the amusing reason behind the change.
During a conversation at the VE Day Service of Thanksgiving last Thursday, Prince William shared the backstory. After the ceremony, he and Princess Kate joined King Charles III, Queen Camilla, and other royals in meeting veterans and their families. Gillian Walklate, daughter of veteran Dorothy Smith, recounted her exchange with the prince.
“The Prince said his neck order kept banging on his chin, and he joked that’s why he had grown a beard,” Walklate said. “He was so friendly and easy to talk to.”
Though William may have been light-hearted, the beard appears to serve a practical — and stylish — purpose. Since his new look debuted, short beards have become increasingly popular among celebrities and the public alike, with figures like David Beckham and Jared Leto embracing the trend.
Hair expert Paul Windle, of Windle London Salon in Covent Garden, said the Prince’s facial hair has influenced men’s grooming. “Prince William’s short beard gives the appearance of grooming effort, unlike stubble, which can seem rushed,” he explained. “It looks clean, masculine, and highlights the jawline — a key feature for many men.”
Windle added that a well-groomed beard can enhance facial structure, especially as men age. “As the jawline softens over time, a short beard can bring back definition and strength to the face.”
With his subtle yet effective style shift, Prince William may have quietly secured his place as a modern grooming trendsetter.
