Big Bangs Are Back: Celebrities Revive the Mall Bang Trend

by lily

The voluminous bangs of the late ’80s and early ’90s—often called “mall bangs”—are making a noticeable comeback among celebrities.

It started on December 4, when Nicole Kidman arrived at The Hollywood Reporter’s Women in Entertainment Gala sporting high-volume, deeply side-parted bangs. At the time, it was a subtle nod to the once-iconic hairstyle. Now, the trend is gaining momentum.

Over the weekend, actress Keke Palmer embraced a similar look while speaking in Atlanta during her Many Masters tour, which promotes her new book, Master of Me. She wore a pastel pink miniskirt and a floral blouse, complemented by soft pink makeup. But her hairstyle stole the spotlight. With full, flouncy bangs, Palmer’s hair reminded some fans—like editorial assistant Jennet Jusu—of DJ Tanner’s signature look from the early 1990s.

Palmer isn’t alone in reviving the retro fringe. Elizabeth Banks was recently photographed with voluminous side bangs, styled by hairstylist Clayton Hawkins and shared by makeup artist Fiona Stiles. Her look added to the growing list of stars embracing this dramatic throwback.

As 2025 approaches, the revival of big bangs seems to be picking up speed. With more celebrities joining the trend, one thing is clear: it might be time to bring back the strong-hold hairspray. The new year could be big, bold—and very blow-dried.
