George Clooney is back to his natural look, much to the relief of fans who weren’t fond of his recent hair transformation.
On Tuesday, the 64-year-old actor was spotted in New York City with his signature salt-and-pepper hair peeking out from under a white Bronx baseball cap. The subtle return of his gray roots follows months of criticism after he dyed his hair dark brown for his Broadway debut as journalist Edward R. Murrow in Good Night, and Good Luck.
Clooney took on the darker look for the stage adaptation of his 2005 film, a role that also earned him his first Tony Award nomination. Despite the professional recognition, the dyed hair sparked a wave of disapproval from fans—and even his wife, Amal Clooney, wasn’t a fan. Social media users compared the look to a “black Sharpie job,” with some saying it made the Hollywood star appear “20 years older.”
Dressed casually in a black leather jacket, khaki pants, Adidas sneakers, and blue-tinted sunglasses, Clooney smiled and waved to fans as he arrived at the Winter Garden Theatre, where the play is currently running. He was accompanied by a security team.
Clooney has taken the backlash with humor. While being honored with a portrait at the famous Sardi’s restaurant last month, he joked about the artwork, which portrayed him with his classic gray hair. “I like the hair color,” he said. “It’s much better than my hair color right now.”
Good Night, and Good Luck officially premiered in early April and will run through June. Clooney’s nomination for Best Lead Actor was announced by Tony winners Wendell Pierce and Sarah Paulson on CBS Mornings. His competitors include Louis McCartney (Stranger Things: The First Shadow), Cole Escola (Oh, Mary!), Daniel Dae Kim (Yellow Face), and both Harry Lennix and Jon Michael Hill (Purpose). The Tony Awards will take place June 8 at Radio City Music Hall, hosted by Wicked star Cynthia Erivo.
