Ernakulam South police have registered a case against the owner of a private hair and skin clinic in Panampilly Nagar, Kochi, along with two others, following serious complications reported by a patient after a hair transplant procedure.
Sanil, a Kochi resident, underwent the transplant in February expecting a standard recovery. However, soon after the procedure, he developed severe pain and signs of infection. He eventually required nearly ten surgeries to treat the complications, according to Deccan Herald.
On March 3, Sanil noticed yellowish lesions on his scalp that began to ooze pus. Despite these symptoms, clinic staff allegedly dismissed his concerns and advised him to return to their facility instead of seeking help elsewhere.
By March 10, Sanil’s condition had worsened. He visited Lourdes Hospital, where he was referred to a plastic surgeon. The surgeon diagnosed him with a serious bacterial infection, The Hindu reported. The infection required multiple surgeries and prolonged treatment, which placed significant physical, emotional, and financial pressure on Sanil and his family.
Police investigations have revealed that the clinic has since shut down, and the accused doctor remains untraceable. Authorities are also probing whether the clinic held the required medical licenses and if its staff were qualified to perform such procedures.
The incident has sparked public concern and prompted health advocates to call for stricter oversight of cosmetic treatment centers in Kerala. They are urging the government to implement tighter regulations to ensure patient safety and prevent unqualified practitioners from operating in the field.
