Gwen Stefani is known for her ever-evolving hair. While her platinum blond locks are her signature, the pop star often experiments with bold colors and cuts. But are all those styles her natural hair? As it turns out, not always — Stefani openly wears wigs and extensions.
In a 2015 interview with Entertainment Tonight, Stefani joked, “Nothing here is me. Everything is fake.” When asked about her natural hair, she replied, “Who knows? I haven’t seen it since ninth grade.”
Her longtime hairstylist, Danilo Dixon, confirmed that Stefani’s real hair is wavy and brunette. To maintain her bright blond look, he colors her hair every week before filming The Voice. “Gwen’s an Italian girl with wavy brown hair,” Dixon told Refinery29. “So I developed a high-lift formula for her.”
Stefani also uses wigs to switch up her style or protect her hair from damage. In 2022, she appeared on The Voice with long, straight black hair and blunt bangs — a look she replaced just days later with blond hair featuring black-dyed ends. In a 2024 episode, she wore a wavy, blond wig with bangs that sat noticeably different from her usual hairline, another clear sign it wasn’t her real hair.
When she’s not wearing wigs, Stefani turns to extensions for volume and length. She often uses clip-ins from LEC Dream Hair, a brand by Amanda Craig, co-owner of Leigh, Edwards & Company and hairstylist to Stefani’s husband, Blake Shelton. The brand confirmed on Instagram that the singer uses their products.
Stefani has long been vocal about her love for bold fashion and beauty choices. She told Teen Vogue that her unique style began before fame. “I definitely look back at certain moments and don’t think I looked good… but I know why. I didn’t have a hairstylist, I did all my own makeup, and I was going to the local fabric store for all of my outfits.”
Still, her fashion and beauty choices have always been personal. “Even if no one was looking, I’d still be wearing the same things,” she said. With her creative flair and love for change, Stefani shows no signs of giving up her wigs and extensions anytime soon.
