While genetics play a major role in determining hair texture and length, new research suggests that lifestyle habits, including hair care routines, can also influence hair health. Experts now say consistent scalp oiling and massage may improve hair growth and appearance over time.
Natural hair oiling, a centuries-old practice, has gained renewed popularity thanks to platforms like TikTok. Creator Niki Galvez recently shared her routine, which combines scalp oiling with a massage tool, and claimed it led to significant hair improvements.
“I definitely used to do it wrong,” Galvez said in a video. “It took about two to three months to see results. The shine and moisture were immediate, and after a few months, my hair started to grow noticeably.”
She described her two-step routine: first using a scalp massage tool to stimulate circulation, followed by applying oil from roots to ends. She lets the oil sit for four hours before rinsing.
Hair oiling involves applying natural oils—such as coconut, argan, or castor oil—to nourish the scalp and strands. According to the Cleveland Clinic, this method helps restore moisture and replace nutrients lost through regular washing. “Our hair, like our skin, needs a balance of oils to stay healthy,” the clinic notes.
When paired with scalp massage, oiling can offer more than just shine. Studies show that massages may increase blood flow to the scalp and stimulate hair follicles. A study published in Dermatology and Therapy observed nine Japanese men over 24 weeks. Researchers found that the thickness of hair in massaged areas increased slightly, from 0.085 millimetres to 0.092 millimetres. While small, such changes can make a visible difference in overall hair density.
Experts recommend daily scalp massages—up to twice a day—for best results. Though progress may take time, regular oiling and massage could be a natural, low-cost way to boost hair health and thickness.
