Sophia Umansky, daughter of Kyle Richards and Mauricio Umansky, has shared her experience with hair loss as a side effect of the weight-loss medication Mounjaro.
In a TikTok video posted on April 30, the 25-year-old revealed that she has been taking Mounjaro for the past four months to help with weight loss. Mounjaro, an FDA-approved prescription medication for Type 2 diabetes, is known for its ability to reduce appetite and improve how the body processes sugar and fat.
However, Sophia explained that one of the major side effects she’s been dealing with is hair loss. She admitted, “I am very lucky that I have so much hair, because at the rate that I’ve been losing hair, I’m gonna be bald in about a week.” She noted that the hair loss started about three to four weeks ago.
In the video, she showed her bathroom with hair accumulated in the sink and shower, saying, “This is every day… and you’re not even seeing the half of it.” She demonstrated how quickly her hair falls out by running her fingers through her hair and pulling out a “pile” of strands.
Despite the significant hair loss, Sophia clarified that she doesn’t believe the medication is directly causing it. She believes it’s due to rapid weight loss from the medication and not eating enough vitamins and protein. “I think it’s a direct result of rapid weight loss… not eating enough vitamins, protein, all that kind of stuff,” she explained.
Sophia has been working to counteract the side effects by taking vitamins and focusing on her protein intake. Her experience aligns with telogen effluvium, a condition where rapid weight loss can cause temporary hair shedding, according to Drugs.com.
In the comments section, many TikTok users responded with advice, offering tips like using Kérastase Genesis line, topical minoxidil, Nutrafol, or a combination of rosemary oil, jojoba oil, and castor oil. One user suggested she get her thyroid checked, as undiagnosed thyroid issues can sometimes cause hair loss.
Sophia has also been using OMI hair growth peptides and taking collagen and Grüns vitamins in an effort to combat the hair loss.
