A man has opened up about his experience wearing wigs daily after losing his hair at just 18.
Hair often plays a big role in how people feel about their appearance. For Nick, losing hair as a teenager hit his confidence hard. He tried to hide the patches on his head but faced teasing and hurtful comments. Some called him “baldy” and said he looked much older.
Speaking to YouTube’s Truly TV, Nick said he first noticed his hair receding on the sides. “It shocked me,” he said. “I worried people would make fun of me, and it really hurt my confidence.”
At first, Nick wore caps all the time—even at parties. But it made socializing, especially with women, difficult. He recalled a moment when a woman asked him to remove his hat, only to tell him to put it back on right after. He also tried using eyeshadow to cover bald spots, but someone questioned why he had makeup in his hair.
Feeling insecure, Nick started avoiding friends and family. He even tried shaving his head but didn’t like how the hair grew back. “I had no confidence at all,” he admitted.
Nick considered a hair transplant but was put off by the cost and uncertainty. Instead, he found a nearby salon offering hair systems—real hair pieces applied with adhesive that last four to six weeks. These systems, made from donated hair, cost between £160 and £1,000, which Nick says is more affordable than surgery.
“The first time I wore a hair system, it changed my life,” Nick said. “My confidence skyrocketed. I felt great, socialized better, and didn’t worry about my hair. All my fears disappeared.” He added that he could swim, wash, and exercise with the hair system, making it very practical.
Nick began sharing his hair loss journey on social media during lockdown. While some responses were negative, many thanked him for being open and helping reduce the stigma around hair loss.
One YouTube commenter said, “I think he’s handsome either way, but it’s so important how we feel about ourselves. Go for it, mate.” Another added, “Beautiful man, do what makes you happy.” Some even encouraged Nick to embrace baldness, saying he would look great without hair too.
Regardless, Nick’s story highlights the power of self-acceptance and finding solutions that boost confidence amid hair loss.
