Guy Fieri, best known for hosting Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives, recently shared that his signature spiky, bleached-blond hair wasn’t his idea at all. In an interview with The Wall Street Journal, the 55-year-old Food Network star said the now-iconic look came from a spontaneous decision by a friend who is a hairdresser.
“I had long hair, and she gave me a hard time about it,” Fieri explained. “One day I said, ‘Fine, do whatever you want.’” The result was bleached blond hair that surprised even him. Though he initially wanted to cover it with a beanie, he decided to keep the look—and it stuck.
Fieri also downplayed his haircare routine. “There’s no real routine,” he said. “A little gel in the morning, and we’re good to go—no twisting spikes or anything like that.”
As for his bold shirts, Fieri revealed he doesn’t wear them off-camera. “I don’t think I even own one,” he said. When the network first called him to shoot the pilot for Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives, they requested a short-sleeved collared shirt. Fieri wore a gray-and-black Dickies work shirt. After the show was picked up in 2007, that shirt became part of his official look. “They go, ‘That’s the wardrobe.’”
Off-screen, Fieri prefers a casual style—T-shirts, jeans, shorts, and flip-flops. “I’m not a real fashion icon,” he joked.
Fieri also gave a glimpse into his daily life. He wakes up around 7 a.m. and starts his day with coffee, Wordle, and his two dogs, Smokey and Cash. “They sit on my lap and don’t let me play or drink,” he said. A coffee purist, Fieri prefers Americanos made from his own espresso and finished with almond milk or half-and-half. “I’d rather skip coffee than drink bad coffee.”
Though he usually skips breakfast, he admitted one weakness: “An everything bagel is my kryptonite.” Otherwise, he said, he’s not big on sweets or heavy carbs early in the day.
