Coco Fernandez, a Boston-based barber, is the man behind Marcus Smart’s signature green hairstyle—and much more. Fernandez has become the go-to barber for the Boston Celtics, styling the hair of nearly 75% of the team’s players and coaches.
“You can say I’m pretty much the Celtics’ barber,” Fernandez said. “I take care of about 75% of the players and coaches.”
As the Celtics continue their playoff run, Fernandez’s schedule has become increasingly demanding. After arriving in Miami on Tuesday ahead of Game 1, he had a full day of appointments lined up with guard Marcus Smart, forward Al Horford, center Robert Williams III, forward Malik Fitts, and assistant coach Damon Stoudamire.
Fernandez is best known for shaping Smart’s green hairstyle, a bold look that has become part of the player’s identity. He works in tandem with a stylist named “Jawz,” who handles the dyeing and braiding. “We collaborate on it,” Fernandez said. “My part takes about 45 minutes, and hers takes roughly an hour and 45 minutes. Marcus ends up sitting for almost three hours.”
According to Fernandez, the team puts great value on their appearance, embracing the philosophy: “Look good, feel good, play good.”
