Fans of The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives have been buzzing about a surprising detail in the new season’s intro: cast members Jessi Ngatikaura and Layla Taylor appear with dry hair, while the rest of the women emerge from water in wet, white gowns.
Season 2 of the hit reality series, which follows a group of Mormon mom influencers entangled in a swinging scandal, premiered last week on Hulu and Disney Plus. The updated intro features both returning and new cast members, including Miranda McWhorter, dramatically rising from water — hair soaked — in an ethereal display.
But Jessi and Layla stood out. Their dry hair sparked speculation online, prompting Jessi to address the issue during an appearance on The Viall Files podcast, hosted by Bachelor alum Nick Viall and his wife, Natalie Joy Viall.
“I was just as surprised as anyone to see that Layla and I had dry hair,” Jessi said in a video shared on the podcast. “I was actually the first one to film, and I definitely got my hair wet. I have videos to prove it — flipping it around, everything. Even on the poster, we all had wet hair.”
As a professional hairstylist, Jessi laughed off the idea that she and Layla refused to get wet. “People think we were being divas, but trust me, we don’t get that kind of say. If they wanted our hair wet, it would’ve been wet,” she added. “Maybe I just looked too good with dry hair, so they left it that way.”
She also explained why Layla’s hair may have been kept dry. “Layla has naturally curly hair, and there was concern about her extensions reacting differently than her natural curls,” Jessi said. “So we used a little trick — hairstylist tip — we applied lube to make her hair look wet without actually soaking it.”
In the end, Jessi admitted she’s not sure why the final edit kept their hair dry. “Maybe it just didn’t look the way they wanted with it wet. I’m curious myself,” she said.
