Prince William sparked widespread attention late last year when he appeared with a beard for the first time, shifting from his long-standing clean-shaven look. While Princess Kate is often the royal associated with trend-setting hairstyles, it’s now the Prince of Wales making waves with his grooming choices.
The reason behind the facial hair change came to light after the VE Day Service of Thanksgiving last Thursday. William and Kate attended the ceremony alongside King Charles III and Queen Camilla, where they spoke with veterans and their families.
Gillian Walklate, whose mother Dorothy Smith served in the Royal Navy, shared her conversation with the Prince. “The prince was saying his neck order kept banging on his chin and he joked that’s why he had grown a beard,” she said. “He was so friendly and just so easy to speak to.”
Though William’s comment may have been made in jest, the beard has certainly had an impact. Since his new look debuted, well-groomed facial hair has grown in popularity, not just among celebrities like David Beckham and Jared Leto, but also with the general public.
Paul Windle, founder of Windle London Salon, noted the shift. “Prince William’s short beard gives the appearance of grooming effort, as opposed to stubble that can seem unkempt,” he said. “It looks masculine, polished, and highlights the jawline, which is always flattering.”
Windle added that a neatly trimmed beard can help men maintain a strong profile as they age. “A short, well-groomed beard emphasizes both masculinity and the jaw—two elements that often go hand in hand.”
Whether for comfort, fashion, or a bit of both, Prince William’s facial hair has clearly made its mark.
